A digital X-ray, also known as digital radiography, is a form of X-ray that uses digital sensors rather than photographic film, as in a regular X-ray. The taken image is promptly transformed to digital data and is ready for examination within seconds. The process for digital X-rays is quite similar to traditional X-rays; the technology is significantly different. Bursts of radiation continue to travel through the body, forming an image depending on how much radiation goes through the various organs, but instead of photographic film, digital sensors are used to capture the image. Digital X-ray sensors are typically active matrix flat panels composed of a detecting layer on top of an active matrix array of thin film transistors and photodiodes. These sensors can transform an image into digital form in real time, allowing the doctor to quickly see the results on a computer.
