This test assists your physician in assessing how your heart performs under stress, such as when walking on a treadmill. The ultrasonography examination of the heart known as an echocardiogram assesses the size, force of pumping, and valve function. This is done at maximum heart rate right before working out, right after treadmill walking, and right after your heart rate has decreased again. While you are lying down on an examination table, an echo technician will do a resting scan of your heart. You'll lie on your left side and on your back. Ten small spots on your chest will be prepped by a stress lab technician, who will then apply electrodes—small, sticky, flat patches—to these areas. The electrodes are fastened to an EKG monitor, which records the electrical activity of your heart while the test is underway.
