The Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) is just an X-ray with contrast imaging. Prior to imaging, a contrast agent, usually barium or iodine, is administered intravenously into the patient's circulation. IVP X-rays are utilized to image the kidneys, ureter, or bladder. The opacity of the contrast substance contrasts with soft tissue, radiography, and topography. An IVP X-ray is non-invasive and can reveal anomalies as severe as cancer or as minor as kidney stones. Contrasts of X-rayed portions of the ureter, kidneys, or bladder appear bright white, making problems clearly detectable. The contrast in the IVP X-ray aids the radiologist's examination of the urinary system. Kidney stones, an enlarged prostate, and other urinary tract anomalies are discovered.
