A treadmill test, also known as a cardiac stress test, is used to assess the heart's ability to withstand external stress in the form of exercise. It is one of the most extensively used assays in controlled clinical settings to diagnose ischemic heart disease and predict prognosis following a myocardial infarction. Patients are assessed to determine their pretest likelihood of being positive. A resting ECG is obtained. The progressive rise in speed and slope is explained to them. Vital indicators are monitored before and during exercise. If the patient develops chest pain or severe dyspnea, the ECG indicates ST elevation, or the patient falls, the test is promptly terminated. If the ST depression is greater than 2 mm or there is fresh onset ST depression in the recovery period, the test is positive.
