The electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a visual representation of the electrical activity of the heart that records the electrical signals transmitted by the heart. ECG machines are conventional equipment in operating rooms, hospital emergency rooms, ambulances with basic life support (nowadays, certain portable devices such as smartwatches also enable ECG monitoring), and so on. It is a non-invasive and painless test performed in clinics (under the supervision of physicians or trained paramedics) that aids in the early detection of heart abnormalities and the monitoring of prognosis in heart-related conditions. Electrodes (little plastic patches that cling to the skin) are inserted at certain locations on the chest, arms, and legs (Einthoven Triangle), and the resulting electrical activity of the heart is monitored, interpreted, and printed out. ECGs are ordered as part of normal physical exams or when patients report clinical symptoms such as chest discomfort, palpitations (noticeable heartbeats), murmurs, dizziness, shortness of breath, and so on. A computerized ECG test aids in the reading of ECGs by making regular determinations of the positive or negative direction that the ECG is taking.
