A barium swallow, also known as an esophagogram, is an imaging test used to detect abnormalities in the upper GI tract. Your lips, back of the throat, esophagus, stomach, and first part of your small intestine are all part of your upper GI tract. The exam uses fluoroscopy, a sort of x-ray. Fluoroscopy captures internal organ movement in real-time. Drinking a chalky-tasting liquid containing barium is also part of the test. Barium is a material that enhances the visibility of certain portions of your body on an x-ray. A barium swallow is performed to aid in the diagnosis of disorders affecting the throat, esophagus, stomach, and first section of the small intestine. These are some examples: Hiatal hernia is a condition in which a portion of your stomach protrudes through the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle that connects your stomach to your chest. GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), is a disorder in which stomach contents seep back into the esophagus. Polyps (abnormal growths) and diverticula (pouches in the intestinal wall) are examples of structural disorders in the GI tract.
