To produce fine-resolution images in a short exam period, spiral multidetector CT uses many detectors as the subject moves continuously through the radiation beam. These fine-resolution images can be rebuilt into three-dimensional (3D) images of carotid, cerebral, coronary, or other arteries using rapid intravenous contrast delivery during the CT scan. In the early 1970s, the emergence of computed tomography (CT) revolutionized diagnostic radiology by providing Clinicians with images of true three-dimensional anatomic structures. CT scanning has become the standard test for diagnosing some urgent and emergent illnesses, such as cerebral hemorrhage, pulmonary embolism (clots in the lungs' arteries), aortic dissection (tearing of the aortic wall), appendicitis, diverticulitis, and obstructive kidney stones. Continuous advances in CT technology, such as faster scanning times and higher resolution, have greatly increased the accuracy and usefulness of CT scanning, which may explain some of the growing use in medical diagnosis.
