A barium swallow test, also known as a modified barium swallow study, cine esophagram, swallowing study, esophagography, or video fluoroscopy swallow study, is a unique kind of imaging examination that produces images of your upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract using X-rays and barium. The pharynx, or back of your mouth and throat, and the esophagus are parts of your upper gastrointestinal tract. During a swallowing test, barium is used to enhance the visibility of specific bodily parts on X-rays. The radiologist will be able to observe the pharynx and esophagus's dimensions and form. Additionally, they will be able to watch how you swallow. A typical X-ray might not show these subtleties. Barium is limited to usage in GI tract imaging examinations. An upper GI series may include a barium swallow test or it may be utilized independently. This series examines the stomach, esophagus, and duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine.A common procedure for a barium swallow test is fluoroscopy. A type of "movie" made of X-rays is fluoroscopy.
